The literary criticism article Paul Laurence Dunbar: A credit to His Race written by Robinson, Lillian and Robinson, Greg criticizes Dunbar as being a politically incompetent author. The article states that Dunbar鈥檚 achievement of being the first black professional writer blinds the public to what he actually wrote. Dunbar was able to reach a wide variety of people throughout many generations. He was active during the Harlem Renaissance and wrote about the black struggle in America. Although he wrote primarily about black suppression he was able to transcend into reaching a white audience, wich in turn cheapened his work because the white public is not offended. His name is also a symbol of greatness and can be seen in use for many buildings and organizations, such as a Paul Dunbar Opera company, the first hospital for African Americans, and a World War Two U.S Navy Ship. Despite all these great recognitions the glittery notion of being the first professional African American author makes individuals take de-notice to the poor quality of work.

I disagree with this article because his race does give him a grand amount of credit and being able to transcend into the white arena simply shows how great of a poet he truly is. Dunbar was able to get a message across without offending any race. Some might say that this cheapened his work, but I think it takes great skill in order to relay a message that evokes strong emotion without offending many people. The Poem Sympathy is about comparing the confinement the African Americans felt during slavery to a caged bird. This poem is a great example of the skill needed to relay a message that evokes emotion without offending many people. He uses metaphors to achieve the effect, such as in the last stanza when Dunbar wrote about why the caged bird sings. He is comparing the crying song of the cage bird to the hymnals sung by the African American slaves of the south. Also, just reading this wonderful poem tarnishes the idea that people are simply mesmerized by the glittery notion of this author. The reason why Dunbar became the first African American professional author was simply because he is a magnificent writer and poet.

Silly Girl,

You have an excellent paper here.

The evaluation is quite good.

In the first paragraph 'which' is spelled incorrectly.

In the second paragraph change 'cage' to 'caged.' Also change 'effect' to 'affect' and listen to how it sounds.

Also in the second paragraph I would replace 'cheapened' with 'diminished.'

Good luck - I'd give you an A.

A.A is right - effect is used correctly in your essay.
No, keep effect the way it is. Effect is a noun, affect is a verb
